First-Principles Thinking

A public-source synthesis of the reasoning approach Elon Musk has described publicly, especially reasoning from physics and fundamental constraints.

01

The Method

Musk has publicly described first-principles reasoning as starting from fundamental truths and reasoning upward, rather than accepting conventional assumptions through analogy.

observed problem → assumptions → fundamental constraints → feasible solution space

02

Decompose the Problem

  • What is physically possible?
  • What is mathematically required?
  • Which requirements are genuine constraints?
  • Which are inherited conventions?
  • What components dominate cost?
  • What components dominate time?
  • What can be eliminated?
  • What can be redesigned?

03

Analogy vs First Principles

Reasoning by analogy asks how similar systems have traditionally been built. First-principles reasoning asks whether those inherited methods are actually required by fundamental constraints.

04

Negative Feedback

In a public TED interview, Musk also emphasized paying attention to negative feedback, particularly from people willing to provide candid criticism.
